Happy Holidays!

Another classic swell trips over a sandbar at Blackhead Beach, Dunedin, New Zealand.

Happy holidays from all the team here at derekmorrison.co.nz!

We hope you have had a great year and are looking forward to a nice break away.

It has been an exciting year for us with the launch in May of derekmorrison.co.nz, followed by the launch of our new weekly photo report from the beaches of Dunedin: www.dunedinlight.com in September. We've had great support from all our clients, friends and wider publishing network with these new endeavours. We are very grateful for this.

Alongside these new projects we've been busy on a series of adventure stories for various magazines throughout the world and have delivered about 100 pages of glossy magazine coverage for New Zealand destinations. We are proud of that – we love showing off our beautiful country. We were supported by two iconic Kiwi companies this year with Macpac and Back Country Cuisine offering invaluable assistance.

We also have a cool story on our photography work feature in the latest issue of International Mountain Bike Magazine (read it here).

We hope 2012 is as exciting as this year has been. We have plans to grow the Dunedin Light brand and to expand the calendar side of our business, and we have partnered with Photo New Zealand to supercharge the photo library side of our business in 2012, so a dull moment shouldn't see the light of day.

We wish you all the best for 2012 and look forward to working with you again soon to help you achieve your goals. Play hard – you deserve it, we all deserve it.

– the team at Derek Morrison.co.nz

How We Shot It

This photo was made with an 8mm Sigma fish-eye lens, with New Zealand's best female downhill racer, Harriet Harper, at Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park near Nelson. Not only is Harriet a fun person to work with, but she is precise on a bike – lucky too, because I am about 20cm from her front wheel here hunkered down with three Canon EX550 speedlites lighting the scene, triggered by Pocket Wizard radio remotes with the transceiver mounted to my Canon EOS 5D MkII. It's shot at 1/250th at 5.6 and ISO100. Harriet rocks – she has about 3.5m to pull up before the next drop ... but was smiling throughout each take.

Latest Images

If you haven't signed up for the weekly reports from Dunedin Light yet then visit the website and see what all the fuss is about. We upload the best images from each week's shooting so lots of new imagery on our photo library each week. It's not all surf either – we have lots of beach scenes, people enjoying the beach and loads of cool sunrises, sunsets and days when the fog just drifts in and out.
