About Us

> New Zealand-born photographer Derek Morrison has specialised in action sports photography since 1994, focusing his lenses on surfing, snowsports, dirt bikes, mountain biking, outdoor recreation and all the nature and people in between. He has held every position from a struggling "no fixed abode" freelancer to editor of top-performing action sports magazines and on to the management helm of the action sports division of a large Australian-based media company.

"I started in the days when we bulk-rolled our own Fuji Velvia slide film in a darkroom, edited on a purpose-built lightbox and sketched positionals for a  designer. Now Photoshop is my darkroom, my Macs are my lightboxes and I can send hi-res images around the world in an instant," he laughs.

Derek's work continues to take him to the furthest reaches of the world on exciting adventures in wild places. He grew up on a farm in Puketurua before his family moved to Cambridge where he finished school. After two years at Massey University in Palmerston North he left to pursue a career in photography. He has travelled extensively throughout the world, before settling down at Dee Why Beach in Sydney's Northern Beaches in 2000. In 2008 he returned to live in New Zealand with his wife Rachael and two daughters Taya and Rewa. He chose Dunedin for its endless coastline, vibrant city life, consistent surf and its easy access to the mountains of Canterbury, Central Otago and Fiordland. He and Rachael have since added a son, Keo, to their family.
